The world's name is Alorthon. There is one civilized continent, Geline. It is connected by a thin land bridge to a second continent, Enelen, which is currently uninhabited. Geline is dominated by the Harlinde Empire, who is currently funding exploration of Enelen in search of treasure and artifacts through the Royal Seekers Guild.
Geline is relatively peaceful on a large scale, with few dangerous creatures near cities and towns. Enelen is more dangerous, covered with jungle as far as any explorer has gone. The jungles are full of strange, unstudied animals. Those that have been encountered are often either poisonous or deadly predators. But the ruins of ancient cities are common in the jungle, standing silent and reclaimed by nature, and full of rune-relics and treasure.
The Royal Seekers Guild was founded by the Royal Family to explore the jungles of Enelen and retrieve it's prizes. There are three types of teams sent out by the Guild. The first are the Scouts, who forge into unknown territory, mapping all that they can. It is the Scouts who locate the ruins and temples and carve the paths for the other teams to follow. Second are the Hunters, who delve into the depths of buildings and caves to clear out any animals, monsters, or traps. They clear the way and move on to the next location. Last, but not least, are the Gatherers, whose job is to retrieve the treasures and bring them safely home. Gatherers follow through and glean all they can from every mission.
Magic in the world of Alorthon is rune-based. Some people are what is known as rune-compatible, and will engrave upon themselves their chosen runes. The runes allow them to cast the specified magic, at a cost of personal stamina and energy. Certain materials have also been found to be compatible with runes and channeling, enabling magic to be automated, or used at a cost of natural resources instead of personal ones. There are several types of runes. Manipulation runes allow a specified element or object to be manipulated by the user, these are best applied as personal runes. Enhancement runes allow a user to strengthen a specified trait. Channeling runes are often used as tech runes, allowing an object to channel the energy of a personal rune. Creation runes allow the creation of an element not readily available. Object and Element runes specify what other runes can take control over.
