Alton waited on the plain overlooking the beach where the ships came in. He had arrived a day earlier, in order to pick up the map to Site 24 from Scout Thomson, but was waiting on the arrival of his two new teammates. Only a month prior he was assigned as a Gatherer Team Lead, and was in charge of two recruits. Fredward Velonde and Mia Davenport were their names, if memory served him correctly. They were due to arrive on the next ship, along with the supplies they would need. It was an easy job, this one. Site 24 was a small village and shrine, but the report listed several small carvings and a cache of scrolls. There was always the possibility of more, it was neither the Scouts' nor the Hunters' job to do a full search, but that of the Gatherers.
When he saw the large ship approaching the shore, Alton grabbed his pack and slung it over his shoulders. He didn't need much, it was less than a day's hike to the site, and they could camp there for the night. The only thing he didn't have was the Warp Gate, a small portable rune-tech device that let the Gatherers send the artifacts back to the Guild Hall, back in Iriond, but that was arriving with his teammates. It would be a while before they were allowed home, tours of duty were rarely less than several months long, so the Gates were developed to ease transport. Not only were they good for sending back artifacts and treasures, but they also were useful for receiving supplies, allowing teams to stay in the field for longer without needing to send ships. It's a pity we can't use Warp Gates for personal transport, he thought to himself. How much more convenient would it be, if we could just set them up in safe houses and jump between them and the Guild?
